Outlaws Leap into First Place with Win over Eagles 11/4/2009
By Mike Unterreiner
The St. Louis Outlaws leaped over the first-place Eagles Tuesday evening, with a 3-2 victory at Kirkwood. The Eagles had been with only unbeaten and untied team after two games in the B3 division. But, just as they had done in their previous game, the Outlaws outshot their opponent in every period. The first period was played at a measured pace until the last few minutes. Joe Wallington got the Outlaws on the board first with an unassisted goal with a minute and a half remaining in the period. But with just 14 seconds left before the Outlaws could escape the first with the lead, new Eagle Dejai Johnason scored to even the game at one.
The game opened up in the second, with the Outlaws capitalizing by scoring on two of the fifteen shots they put on Eagle netminder Matt Heath. Midway through the frame, Outlaw defenseman Mike Unterreiner took a pass back to the point from Bill Gould, and blasted a shot that caromed off an Eagle defender and settled into the goal. Again, Wallington scored with a minute and a half remaining in the period, this time with an assist to new Outlaw Cari Beres. So the second ended with the Outlaws holding a 3-1 lead over the division leaders.
The third period tightened up, as the Outlaws attempted to limit the Eagles scoring chances. They were largely successful, except for allowing rookie Eagle Ryan Cohen to rush the puck half the length of the ice and put it past Outlaw goalie Craig Schellenbach. The Eagles pulled their goalie with a minute and a half remaining in the game, but were unable to create a serious scoring threat. They did get one good shot on net, which Schellenbach saved and covered up in the last minute. In their overzealous efforts to push the puck into the net, the Eagles poked at the Outlaw goalie, sparking a brief scuffle. But no penalties were assessed, and the Outlaws were able to keep the Eagles away from their net as time expired.
As a result of the victory, the Outlaws find themselves in sole possession of first place, pending the outcome of games to be played later in the week. The Outlaws next opponent will be the Ice Devils, who have moved up from the B4 division. The game will be at 9:15 on Wednesday, November 11th at St. Peters North rink.
